Madeira Island is calling…
From its all year-long subtropical climate, vibrant culture, breathtaking landscapes and lush forests – the island of Madeira, Portugal, offers visitors so much to see and do. Often referred to as the “Hawaii of Europe”, Madeira island is a unique, one-of-a-kind destination just off the coast of Morocco boasting fascinating history and traditions, tasteful gastronomy, incredible wines, stunning venues and unique experiences – making it the perfect MICE destination for events and groups.

Gastronomy
Madeira island has an incredible gastronomic scene – from traditional, authentic cafes offering up mouthwatering local cuisine to luxurious dining institutions serving up innovative and tasteful plates – Madeira’s gastronomy lets bold flavours, creativity and fresh produce take centre stage.
Known for its fresh, local seafood, trying out the local delicacy – black scabbard fish – is a must for those visiting the island. Most commonly served with a banana, the intensive fishing of this particular species dates all the way back to the 19th century. Why not bask in the sun and dine at the chic poolside restaurant of the iconic Reid’s Palace and try the speciality here, where it is served up with a fried banana on avocado tartar with a beautifully light and refreshing tomato consomme. Oh, and if you still have room for desert, The Reid’s Palace creme brulee is also among the best we have ever tasted.
The Galáxia Skyfood & Skybar located on the 16th floor of the Savoy Palace is another excellent dining option that’s sure to give guests that ‘wow’ factor. Boasting panoramic views over Funchal’s bright city lights and harbour, this contemporary institution is elegantly decorated with subdued dark tones and touches of bright sparkes, making you feel as though you really are above the clouds and dining in the starry night’s sky. Serving up tasteful plates like tuna tartare with mango, avocado and ponzu and tamarillo sauce and Rubia Gallega beef tenderloin, caramelised aubergine, peas and fermented garlic… this fine dining institution will take your tastebuds on a true journey of flavour.
Finally, the Design Centre Nini Andrade Silva offers diners a truly unique dining experience. The emblematic building known locally as “Molhe” is contemporary, chic and the stylish interior reflects an artistic creation environment – while serving up beautiful plates of innovative cuisine. They also serve up a fantastic take on one of the locals’ favourite dishes – a fresh, fragrant tomato and onion soup served with a low temperature poached egg – this dish may be simple, but it is simply delicious.

Unforgettable Experiences
The volcanic island of Madeira is home to some of the world’s most beautiful nature, lush forests, picturesque beaches and breathtaking viewpoints – so the options for unforgettable experiences and exciting team building activities here are endless.
With its magnificent landscapes and impressively high peaks, taking a hike to one of Madeira’s famous viewpoints and experiencing views of the island over the clouds is definitely an activity not to be missed. Hiking not quite your style? Fear not, as Maderia also offers extremely fun jeep tours across the island which can take you to the best viewpoints in style! Vereda dos Balcões, Pico do Arieiro and Miradouro do Curtado are among some of the most incredible viewpoints Madeira has to offer. If that doesn’t take your fancy, another fantastic way to see the island is by cable car! Madeira’s cable cars can take you straight from the coast to some of the island’s highest points with showstopping panoramic views of the colourful, vibrant landscapes. Oh, and for the dare devils among us – the Cabo Girão Skywalk provides one of the most impressive views of the coastline – but be warned, walking across the glass flooring is not for the faint hearted!
You simply cannot visit Madeira without sampling the famous Madeira wine. So, another fantastic activity to enjoy is Madeira wine tasting at a local winery – such as Blandy’s Madeira Wine Lodge. Here, groups can learn about the history of Blandy’s Madeira wine, enjoy a guided tour of the lodge where over an impressive 650 barrels and vats are stored and sample a taste of each delectable flavour, before deciding which is their favourite.
For those looking to learn more about the fascinating history of the island, a tour of the Bordal embroidery factory in Funchal makes for an extremely interesting afternoon. Here, groups can learn about this century-old tradition and see first-hand how the intricate tracing and designs are made carefully by hand and admire the true skill, time and effort that goes into the production of each beautiful handmade piece.

Of course, an absolute must-do is tobogganing on a home-made wicker sledge from the village of Monte to the city of Funchal. The Monte tobogganing tradition dates back to the early 19th century, when the wicker sledges were used as a means of transport by local residents who needed to get down from the village of Monte to Funchal quickly.
The exciting ride, adrenaline rush and superb views over the city as your race down the streets in the home-made sledges make this tradition an extremely popular attraction to this day. So, sit back, hold tight and enjoy the views over Funchal city as you immerse yourself in this fun-filled tradition.
